Overview

When speaking about etiquette things that first come to mind are etiquette at job interviews, high society dinners or meeting your partner’s parents for the first time. But etiquette equally important for a healthy long-term relationship and you shouldn’t break these etiquette rules. As you must have already guessed, we’ll speak today about etiquette in a serious relationship.

1)      Ringing up for a date

This is an important part when it comes to first dates. It goes like this: “Who makes the date – pays the date”. So, this means that if you invited your new girlfriend to some place, café or restaurant for example, you should bear in mind that generally you’re the one to pay the bill. It’s common though that your partner will ask to pay halves, but that’s not always the case. Besides choosing who pays, you should also have a general plan of your future date including topics to speak about and thoughts about how to act if the date goes wrong.

2)      Controversial topics

You should also avoid speaking on controversial topics on your first dates – politics and religion are the most common ones. However, when moving to a more serious relationship you can discuss them and it will be best if you mind your manners than if you bypassed these topics entirely.

3)       Love etiquette

Though you probably know general good manners and etiquette in a relationship, it’s almost always a matter of what makes both you and your partner comfortable in a relationship. So, stick to this unique etiquette with this unique person, and this will be the best option.

4)      Online dating

Internet has made dating etiquette more complicated and there are certain rules to follow here too. We’ll list the most important ones – don’t announce your relationship online (in Facebook most commonly) if you did not intend to do it in real life; don’t send too much inappropriate texts or SMS (better don’t do it at all) when you got too drunk; don’t get too close with their family and friends online unless your partner initiated your contacts in real life.

5)      Not the real you

The most important point! Don’t pretend to be better than you are and don’t try too hard to impress your partner because it will not be the real you. Your real character will anyway be found out later and you can’t pretend to be another person for the whole life.

That’s all. Good luck!
